‘Apres moi la Deluge’
Said to have been uttered by King Louis Xv of France in 1757 after the county’s disastrous defeat at the Battle of Rossbach. Since then, it has been adopted by various luminaries throughout Europe, ascribing to themselves the belief that following their departure from the political stage, chaos will ensue. That was more than likely the sentiment behind Louis’ utterance.
You probably think that I am going to ascribe it to the ruling political party in this country which seems, after today’s announcements of deselecting any of its MPs that disagrees with it, to be intent on emulating the illustrious dauphin. A classic case of ‘sod the populace!’.
You would be wrong, though. I’m talking about weather predictions, with the claim that the worst of the storms and wet weather that will be heading towards Europe because of global warming will hit the UK hardest – and that we ‘ain’t seen nothing yet!’.
Following recent floods the most alarming aspect was its effect on transport systems – in particular the rail network. As we saw on television it doesn’t take much to flood a railway track, making it impassable.
In the last newsletter, though, we had an article about BlueSky and its LIDAR scanning capabilities, providing a vastly enhanced terrain map for Dublin airport, pinpointing the most likely areas in the airport to be flooded. It didn’t take long for mainstream media to catch up, and to prevent future disruption by future deluges, I would like to suggest a similar exercise be carried out on the country’s arterial railways.
