Full English Brexit
A Brexit without a deal is like a Full English Breakfast (with apologies to other countries slightly involved on the periphery) when you stay in a B&B or hotel. You feel great at first, where you get stuffed with everything you want, whilst others look on with stupefaction. Quickly, though, reality steps in and you have to count the cost – an expanding waistline, and pounds added on – or, financially, taken off. That's when the belt tightening starts – and in no time you are back on toast and coffee.
That's where we are headed, but the implications of a 'deal, or no deal' have different connotations for the construction industry. Any type of exit is heaping challenges on the industry to cope with the changing employment regulations for European workers, the extra paperwork needed to handle the massive flow of construction materials in and out of Europe, and the legal issues surrounding the abandonment of European directives in favour of UK rules and regulations.
The industry is already suffering from a lack of professional workers in all area, which won't be helped by the Government's proposed solutions and Contractors will have to rely on their ERP suppliers to keep them abreast of an evolving regulatory environment as the country feels its way forward, and rely on them utterly to implement the multiplicity of changes heading their way, within their applications. Red tape? Bureaucracy? Incompetence? You ain't seen nothing yet, as the Government (i.e. the grunts) try to get to grips with the changes.
