Comment
Our November eNewsletter includes an interview with a Document Manager regular, AIIM’s chief evangelist John Mancini. One of the reasons John gets so much coverage in our pages is that he is always guaranteed to stir up some controversy with his observations on the industry. In our most recent conversation he was keen to argue that the DM/ECM industry as a whole hasn’t been good enough at getting their message across in a way that gets our technologies up the list of ‘things to do’ for an organisation:
“There is still a tendency for our industry to assume that people outside the sector have an inherent interest in managing content in an effective way; they really don’t! The terms that we use to describe the processes and such like – document and content management terms – don’t resonate with the person involved in a specific business process.”
What this comes down to is an ongoing failure (over a very long time) on the part of the industry to make its solutions seem relevant to the information processing needs of businesses. What will it take for the message to get through? Do we need a whole new way of describing what these systems are for? Or is it simply a matter of ‘lining up’ DM/ECM terminology with business requirements?
