Welcome to our first eNewsletter of 2017, which includes a thought provoking piece from Solarwinds’ Kong Yang looking at the growth in Cloud storage and comparing the pros and cons of Cloud vs ‘traditional’ on-premise for your information. As more and more businesses re-define their IT strategies in terms of digital transformation goals, it might seem obvious that Cloud will be the preferred option for most – but things are rarely so straightforward.
As the article points out, IT professionals need to evaluate and understand the quality-of-service and compliance requirements of their applications - in relation to the needs of the business -before determining whether to keep their data ‘on their grounds or up in the clouds’. Kong Yang says: “While Cloud storage may be an intriguing option, there are positives and negatives associated with each, including cost, control and security. Sadly, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, organisations need to decide which approach - on-premises or cloud-based - provides the best fit based on individual needs.”
For the moment perhaps we will continue to see hybrid approaches in most businesses, especially in document/content management environments. As ever, feel free to share your thoughts with us via the email address below.
