Welcome to our February eNewsletter, which includes an interesting update on the state of play in making the UK health service ‘paperless at the point of delivery’, as was envisaged in 2013 by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. With the announcement last year of a 4 billion pound investment in (among other things) digitisation efforts, are we really getting any closer to a paper-free NHS?
The NHS National programme for IT (NPfIT), launched in 2002, was meant to produce a single, secure system of electronic patient records for every GP and hospital in the country. Forecast to cost £2.3 billion over three years, the total had reached over £10 billion by the time it was abandoned in 2013.
Ryan Jordan of 4D Data Centres argues in his article that this time the government is maybe doing it right: “NPfIT was a huge, centrally controlled project which attempted to impose top-down standards on the entire NHS. This time around, the government has encouraged bottom-up development. This recognises that different parts of the organisation have built their own solutions over the years, and that the important task is to connect them, rather than replace them with a one-size-fits-all initiative.”
We’d love to hear your views, especially if you work in - or provide services to – the NHS. Feel free to contact me at the email below.
