Could the pandemic deliver a paperless reality for law firms?
Opinion | March 2021
Law firms have been talking about going paperless and transitioning to a more efficient way of working for years, says Storetec's Amy Wright - but it would seem the pandemic might deliver the final push in making this digital goal a reality.

Welcome to the March eNewsletter from Document Manager magazine. This month our featured articles include a piece from Storetec's Amy Wright about how Covid-19 appears to be pushing customers in one particular sector - legal - toward adoption of paper-free (or paper-light) systems and processes.
As the article explains: "Imagine a typical law firm: filing cabinets across the office full of client documents and desks stacked with correspondence with post-it notes of helpful numbers. During the lockdown it wasn't quite as easy as taking all those filing cabinets home with you! With documentation being incredibly confidential in nature, accessing such records in a secure and compliant environment was another obstacle law firms faced."
The fact is that you could probably replace the word 'law' in that first sentence with almost any other type of business, and a large part of Amy's argument would still stand. Compliance has become even more important to organisations since huge swathes of the workforce have been working from home, and records management is rising to the top of many corporate agendas.
Going paperless - and all that this entails - is now firmly on most business' radar, and despite the horrific circumstances that started it all, that shift is likely (eventually) to be a good thing for this industry.
