Welcome to the September 2019 Newsletter.

At the time of writing Greta Thunberg, the sixteen year-old Swedish climate change campaigner, is powerfully chastising world leaders at the United Nations Climate Summit for their ineffectiveness in the face of global warming. So how can the IT sector play its part?

The concept of sustainable IT isn’t new but it has never felt more timely, and in this issue Circular Computing’s Steve Haskew outlines how IT remanufacturing can help : “The remanufacturing process takes otherwise discarded enterprise-grade models from leading brands of between one and four years old which are fully disassembled, upgraded and reassembled (undergoing a 100-point checklist) to meet original high performance and perfect cosmetic condition.” As steve explains, e-waste is now the world's fastest growing waste stream, but IT remanufacturing can help stem that toxic tide.

The leasing of hardware represents another route to sustainable IT, and in the form of Device-as-a-Service can also play its part in the circular economy. As Carmen Ene, CEO of 3 Step IT explains DaaS can “reduce costs, improve IT service levels and make IT more sustainable” - laudable goals for any IT department. Read Carmen’s article this month for more.
