It’s close to midnight, and something evil’s lurking in the dark - so it’s a good job October is about more than just halloween then. For the past 18 years October has also been designated as National Cyber Security Awareness Month, with the theme for 2022 being “See Yourself in Cyber,” putting the emphasis on the role that people play in security - both as threats and prevention.
To this end we’ve an article this month from Matthew Margetts, Director of Sales and Marketing at Smarter Technologies, that explores how zero trust addresses the themes of this year’s Awareness Month. As Matthew explains, with security threats from within organisations increasing “traditional perimeter defences are simply not designed to prevent these attacks, or keep external attackers out, for that matter. And in a hybrid world, an increasing number of enterprise resources now live outside the perimeter, making it even more challenging to protect these assets with legacy approaches.”
The security threats posed by legacy systems, most notably in the public sector, are also addressed by Dan Lattimer, Director Government & Defence, EMEA at CyberArk in his article this issue. Dan explains that “while the race to protect against malicious actors continues, vigilance must be at the forefront of digital innovation within the public sector. Cybersecurity must be a primary component of every significant IT or digital programme, and from the start too.”
By following the guidelines outlined by initiatives like the Cyber Security Awareness Month we can all aim to ensure that suspicious-looking strangers only come a-calling on October 31st.
