In this issue of the newsletter you’ll find cybersecurity articles that range from A-Z (or at least from AI to zero trust). First, Daniel Hofmann, CEO at Hornetsecurity takes a look at the security implications of generative AI, which is now being utilised as a tool in both security defence postures and attacks, with cybercriminals incorporating it into their ransomware and spear-phishing arsenal.
In his article Daniel cautions that “We need to remain aware that this exciting new technology is also proving valuable to malicious actors, making organisations and employees vulnerable to new, more advanced, and increasingly evolving cyberattacks.” This warning is supported by the new 2023 Cybersecurity Research Report from Rackspace in association with Microsoft this month, which found that, “When asked how AI is influencing their organisation's security posture, 62% of survey respondents said that AI has increased their need for cybersecurity, resulting in stricter security measures on data storage and access (58%), greater attention to the exposure of sensitive data (52%) and stronger classification frameworks and guidelines (47%).
The report goes on to highlight how “AI-enabled technologies have become a critical tool in the security arsenal across several cyber investment areas, including app security (85%), cloud-native security (84%), and data security (81%). 81% also say their organisations have a formal policy in place on AI governance and security, though only 39% say that the level of awareness and understanding among employees of their policy is "great," vs. 43% who characterise it as "fair." It’s never been more crucial to keep an eye on AI it seems.
We also have articles this month on the need for a layered defence strategy in hybrid cloud environments and how to unlock the full potential of zero trust for your organisation, and consider what security businesses should be doing to prepare for the latest cybersecurity compliance regulation, the NIS 2 Directive.
