Welcome to our December 2015 e-newsletter.
Our last issue of 2015 includes an interview with Quantum's Christo Conidaris, in which he talks about the 'data tsunami' that threatens to engulf today's businesses; a scenario in which unstructured data is growing at rates of 70% per annum or greater - and as much as ten times as quickly as structured data. Says Christo: "The harsh reality is that, if unstructured data is growing so rapidly, it ceases to matter how fast your backup application is or how efficient your infrastructure is – it is going to get increasingly difficult to meet your backup window requirements." At the same time, as we all know only too well, customers are looking for what Christo calls ‘appliancised’ technology wherever they can get it. None of us want to get involved in the lengthy implementation cycles associated with traditional archival solutions.
This is undoubtedly an issue that is going to get worse before it gets better, as video, images, graphics and sound become ever-more widely used across business applications and the unstructured data tidal wave continues to gain size and speed. It will make for an interesting 2016 - look out for our last print issue of the year (landing on desks in about 10 days) for a comprehensive roundup of predictions and thoughts from industry experts about what else might be on the horizon - and let's hope that it's not all worrying news!
