Welcome to the August eNewsletter from Storage magazine, which includes a particularly thought-provoking round table discussion on the topic of backup - always guaranteed to cause some controversy, of course!
Brian Spanswick of Cohesity argues in the piece that too narrow a focus on backup in and of itself will no longer suffice: "Backup is a critical first step to data protection, but organisations must think strategically and strive for holistic cyber resilience, realising that backup is just one component of a much larger equation."
Two years on from the start of the pandemic, business data continues to grow at an insane pace. As more and more data is needed to be stored and secure - but at the same time available 24/7 - this is having a dramatic effect on what organisations are demanding from their backup solutions.
Chris Addis of Nasuni has a very different perspective, feeling that perhaps backup itself has had its day: "The vast majority of IT professionals we talk to want to get rid of backup and its associated headaches and challenges… Traditional backup technology is evolving, but even cloud backup solutions have major flaws."
Every year we have this discussion, and every year we get dozens of different opinions - which is probably no bad thing from the perspective of the industry itself.
